A team led by the AP investigated police use-of-force tactics that don’t involve an officer’s gun and aren’t supposed to end in death, like physical restraints and Tasers. After three years of reporting, they found that more than 1,000 people died from 2012 through 2021 after police subdued them with this kind of “less-lethal force.”
