Christy Carlson Romano is on the mend after suffering horrific injuries during a shooting trip.
The Even Stevens alum shared that she was hospitalized after being shot in the face multiple times Feb. 7 during a trip to celebrate husband Brendan Rooney’s 42nd birthday in Austin, Texas, where they live.
“I took him to shoot clay pigeons as a present,” the 40-year-old wrote on Instagram Feb. 8, alongside a video of herself with injuries to her right eye and forehead. “There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face.”
Romano said her husband “immediately sprung into action,” assessed her and rushed her to the hospital.
“I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye,” she continued. “Unfortunately a fragment got lodged behind my eye and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time. Doctors will continue to monitor me (I can see normally at the moment).”
The Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test star—who shares daughters Isabella Victoria, 8, and Sophia Elizabeth, 5, with Rooney— said that all she can think about is how grateful she is to be alive.
“I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much. I saw my life flash before my eyes,” she said, “and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant.”
In her video, the Kim Possible alum thanked the medical staff and first responders who came to her aid, calling them, “just the most amazing, superhero-like people to take care of us at our most desperate times.”
“Everything’s kinda clearing out,” she said about her wounds, “but got to say I got shot in the face and lived to tell the tale. Be grateful for every day.”
Rooney, who has been married to Romano for more than 11 years, praised his wife.
“You are the bravest, toughest, most stoic and badass woman I have ever met,” he wrote in a comment on her Instagram post. “I am so thankful you are alive. I am so thankful you are the mother to our children. I wouldn’t know what to do without you. I love you more than life itself.”
Romano joked in response, “God saved me so I could tell you to clean up your empty cans around the house,” adding, “I dunno laughter helps.”
Her husband also shared her video on his Instagram Stories, writing, “Kiss your loved ones.”
