Former President Donald Trump made an unscheduled appearance toward the end of the first night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday night. Wearing a large white bandage over his right ear, where he was injured in an assassination attempt while speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Trump walked onto the convention floor as country singer Lee Greenwood performed the song that has become the former president’s anthem, “God Bless the U.S.A.”
Earlier in the evening, Trump and his running mate, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, were officially nominated as the Republican party’s nominees for president and vice president in the 2024 election. Vance, a 39-year-old who grew up in Kentucky and Ohio, rose to prominence in 2016 with his bestselling memoir Hillbilly Elegy. He has served as Ohio’s junior U.S. senator since 2023.
